Precision in Transit: Delivering 42 tonnes from the Production Floor to New Jersey

Stadium Export Services has assisted a multinational printing and packaging company in relocating a large-scale packaging manufacturing machine to its sister company in the United States.

The OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) appointed Flegg Projects, an experienced heavy equipment moving and handling company, to manage the specialist decommissioning, lifting and handling requirements. Recognising Stadium’s reputation for large-scale packaging and export services in the North East, Flegg Projects selected Stadium as its packaging and freight-forwarding partner.

Stadium met with all the stakeholders on site to understand the scope of work and coordinate the different services around the customer’s production commitments. To minimise disruption, the lifting and handling activities were scheduled over a weekend with Flegg Projects’ equipment loading the machine onto Stadium’s transport.

The nine component parts, weighing a combined 42 tonnes, were transported to Stadium’s 65,000-square-foot facility in Gateshead. The largest packaged unit weighing 21 tonnes, with maximum dimensions of 3.1 metres high and 2.8 metres wide, was safely handled using Stadium’s 50-tonne-capacity gantry crane.

The Challenge

Due to the size and weight of the equipment, conventional sea containers were unsuitable. Stadium designed and manufactured reinforced timber bases and closed-board timber cases to protect the machinery. Each component was vacuum-sealed in a foil vapour-barrier and encased with hygroscopic desiccant to help maintain a dry environment throughout transit. The machinery was then fully enclosed in its protective timber cases.

Stadium’s freight-forwarding team arranged the out-of-gauge transportation by low-loader to London Gateway. The cargo was loaded onto two specialist flat-rack containers and one 40-foot high-cube container. The team also worked closely with the customer’s office to ensure all required shipping and export documentation was completed accurately and submitted correctly.

The Result

The 4,250-mile shipment was completed over 10 weeks, with the goods delivered successfully to Bayonne port in New Jersey.

Working collaboratively across a multi-tier contractual structure, Stadium delivered a safe, coordinated and on-schedule door-to-gate solution covering packaging, preservation and freight forwarding, while helping to minimise disruption to the customer’s production operations.
