What is the military standard for packaging?

The Ministry of Defence Standard 81-41 comprises of six parts:

Part 5 – Production Processes

What are the common military packing levels for preservation?

In accordance with the Ministry of Defence Standard 81-41:

Level J – provides protection under the extremist of climatic conditions for a period of two years

Level N – provides worldwide protection in covered, frost free buildings for up to five years

Level P – commercial packaging, up to five years storage in frost free buildings

How should military goods be packed?

Defence Materiel must be packed to ensure it reaches the end user in a serviceable condition.

The choice of packaging materials must provide adequate physical protection, not make the item attractive, provide clear identification marking, be cost effective, space efficient, fit for purpose and easily handled.

What is a Service Packaging Instruction Sheet (SPIS)?

This is an instruction document on how to clean, preserve and pack MoD materiel, whereby all design work must be undertaken and certified by a ‘Military Packager Approval Scheme’ (MPAS) designer working for an MPAS registered organisation. Stadium Export Services is MPAS registered.

An SPIS is only required for military level packaging and not commercial packaging.

What is a DEFFORM 129A?

The DEFFORM 129A is a document with which a packaging supplier can; request the current status of a SPIS design, whether one exists, discover if an Standard Family Specification (SFS) has been used for the item to be packaged. It is also used, often simultaneously, to request authorisation; to be sent a copy of the SPIS, update/modify the SPIS, use an SFS instead, or produce a new SPIS design.
